For the 2008-09 Dance Season, classes will begin in September
and continue until our Annual Performance in June.
Creative Movement classes are offered
to children ages 3 & 4 (Pre-Dance) and ages 4 ½ to 5 (Kinder-Dance)
and are 30 minutes in length. This introduction to dance develops a
child's coordination, creativity and rhythm, through music appreciation,
creative movement exercises, basic ballet steps and mime. After these
programs the student is well prepared to enter Ballet, Tap and/or Jazz.
This program runs September through June, for the full dance season.
Students enrolled in these programs will have the opportunity to participate
in our Annual Performance.
Hurray! for Ballet This program
is specially designed for children age 3. The 30 minute class focuses
on creative movement, rhythm and basic ballet steps; which develops
a child's coordination, creativity and rhythm. The program is 7 weeks
in length and runs in three sessions. (September 16 to November 18),
(January 13 to March 10) and (March 24 to May 26). Students enrolled
in this program do not participate our Annual Performance.
Let's Dance! This program is gives
children ages 4 and 5 years a great opportunity to experience Ballet
and Jazz. The 45 minute program focuses on basic ballet and jazz technique,
rhythm and creative movement exercises. The program is 10 weeks in length
and runs in three sessions (September 16 to November 18), (January 13
to March 10) and (March 24 to May 26). Students enrolled in this program
do not participate our Annual Performance.
Ballet, Tap and Jazz classes are
offered to children ages 5 ½ & up, teens and adults. The
classes follow the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (B.A.T.D.)
Syllabus, to ensure a high standard of dance education. This allows
the student to progress through a grade system, offering them the opportunity
to take exams based on the work done in class. The standards for exams
are very high, and the certificates and medals issued are acknowledged
by other recognized Dance Associations. Recreational dancers are accepted
to all programs, and there is no obligation to take an exam.
Limbering classes are offered to
students enrolled in ballet, jazz and tap. The class is 30 minutes to
45 minutes in length (depending on student’s age and level), designed
to work on a dancer’s flexibility and strength. All students in
Primary/Pre-Bronze, Bronze levels are encouraged to take the Junior
limbering class. For jazz and ballet students enrolled in Grade 1 and
higher, Limbering is mandatory and is included in the cost of the student’s
program.
The Theatre Program is offered
to children ages 7 & up. It is designed for students who are interested
in expanding their talents on stage. Students explore concepts in character,
setting and plot, through group and individual activities. Other concepts
dealt with include: mime, improvisation, music interpretation and musical
theatre. This program improves students’ self confidence, group
and team work skills, creativity and speaking skills. All theatre students
must also be enrolled in a jazz program at Step by Step.
Lyrical Jazz is available to Jazz
students enrolled in Grade 2 & up. The class utilizes jazz technique
demonstrating the emotion of the music, balance, extension and control.
For students in Gold Jazz & up, the Lyrical Jazz class is mandatory
and is therefore included in the program tuition fees.
Modern Workshop is available to
students in Gold/Grade 3 Jazz or Ballet & up. Students will explore
this unique dance form through barre, centre and floor work. This class
will challenge students to interpret percussion music and their sense
of line and space. The program is divided into three exploratory sessions;
each session will be taught by a separate instructor.
Hip Hop is available to beginner
to advanced dancers, ages 7 to adult. An exciting, high energy class,
where students learn the latest hip hop/street dance moves, just like
their favourite artists. Current hip hop and funk music is used throughout
each class.
Adult Programs are geared to beginner
to intermediate students who have always wanted to take dance or have
past dance training. These programs are a great form of exercise and
give students a great opportunity to explore the art of dance. Classes
are offered in Tap, Ballet, Jazz. Programs are offered two 14 week sessions
(September 14 to December 14, January 11 to April 19.)
